Chris Matheson

Chris Matheson, a member of Mitaanjigamiing First Nation, and lifelong resident of Fort Frances, Ontario, is the founder and owner of Borderland Cannabis - a locally owned and Indigenous-operated retail cannabis store that received Ontario Authorization to open its doors on April 20, 2021. The shop was born out of Chris’s desire to provide a safe, welcoming, and educational store for cannabis consumers in his hometown.


Born and raised in Fort Frances, Chris has always maintained strong ties to the community through lifelong friendships, family, and active involvement in local initiatives. With a family cabin on the North Arm of Rainy Lake, he tries to spend his free time boating, fishing, and snowmobiling - embracing the outdoor lifestyle that defines Northwestern Ontario. These deep roots and personal connections to the area are central to his approach as a business owner.


In 2022, Borderland Cannabis was recognized as “Indigenous Business of the Year” by the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce, further highlighting Chris’s commitment to community development and Indigenous entrepreneurship.
